Alou needs hip surgery, adding to Mets' early injury woes

Port St. Lucie, FL (Sports Network) - New York Mets outfielder Moises Alou learned Thursday that a hernia sustained in a Spring Training game Monday will require surgery, shelving him for the next four to six weeks.

Alou left the Mets' Grapefruit League contest against the Braves in third inning, and saw a doctor back in New York Wednesday.

"After the game, he felt it more and more," Mets general manager Omar Minaya said. "He felt some more discomfort (Tuesday), and (Wednesday) he also felt discomfort."

The 41-year-old Alou was sidelined for nearly 2 1/2 months during the 2007 season with a strained right quad. He managed a .341 average and 13 home runs a year ago, but played in just 87 total games after being healthy for only 98 contests in 2006.

"We came into the season with a track record of Alou, knowing that Alou was going to give us a certain amount of games," Minaya conceded. "We felt that the number of games he was going to give us would be very productive games, the number of games he was going to give us would be very productive games, and I think that bore out last year." and I think that bore out last year."
